Cracks are developing in the relations between Kerala and Tamil Nadu because of the Mullaperiyar dam issue. The 116-year-old dam, originally built for a lifespan of 50 years, is situated in a pro-seismic turbulent area. It is not the people of Kerala alone who will suffer in case of a tragedy. The people of Tamil Nadu, too, will be affected. The Tamil Nadu government can agree to the construction of a new dam with conditions safeguarding its interests. Would it not be better than waiting for a disaster?
